Decoding chassis numbers

Here is a short rundown on chassis/engine numbers throughout the life of the Type 4. While the August 1 number represents the first vehicle built that day (beginning of the new model year at Volkswagen) the July and December dates show the last vehicle and engines produced.

Note: The first two digits of the VIN are the model code. 2-door sedans start with 41, 4-door sedans with 42 and wagons with 46. Example: a car with chassis number 462 205 2808 is a wagon built between 12/31/71 and 7/31/72.
