Salvage Yards
This is a collector for more or less recent information on salvage yards that have (or are said to have) any Type 4 parts cars on them. Before you go, make sure to contact the yard or business and ask if the items are still available. If you know of such a place, be a sport and share this information by telling me about it so that I can put it here for everyone.
California
I have visited this place whenever I happened to be in the San Diego area and they always had a few Type 4s on the lot. The owner, Jim Lucca, is nice and easy to deal with. Bring tools and take the parts off yourself. Interstate also has a second outlet in San Marcos.
Sergio Corona saw a 1973 412 with lots of parts left in April 2003.
Florida
Sunray Bugs in Dade City, Florida (near Tampa) is an aircooled VW repair shop that has a large VW-only wrecking yard attached to it. On his last visitin 2007 Chris Hobbs found over a dozen Type 4s.
Georgia
Eric Forsman says: Tim’s VW is located just outside Atlanta and they have a 1973 412 without engine in the yard. The car is in decent shape and even has the manual and a Chilton repair guide with it. Unfortunately it seems that Tim is unwilling to actually ship parts across the country. Mary Kate Glass talked to him and he claims that shipping is more trouble than it is worth. So this source is probably best for local folks who can stop by in person.
Maryland
According to Jeff Ellis there is a 411 wagon in the back lot at Desmond’s that has been sitting there for years. Maybe there is some salvageable pieces left on it.
Sean Whitcomb has found out about at least one Type 4 on Mark 1’s lot.
Massachusetts
Wally contacted me to let me know that he is selling parts and cars off of a lot owned by his father. There are several complete cars and a lot of spare parts available. See the website for more details and email Wally if you have specific needs, he might be able to help.
Michigan
As of February 2015, Michael Caradonna found two 1971 411 4-door sedans, a 412 4-door sedan, a 1971 411 wagon and a 1972 411 wagon on the lot at Barnum’s salvage. What’s more, the owner also runs a shop named Barnum’s Bug Barn next to the salvage yard, reachable at +1 (989) 871-9880 where he has various other VWs in his yard. Milligan is near Frankenmuth, Michigan.
New York
Tim McInerney has spotted a 1974 412 wagon in the yard at BRIM Recyclers. He says the car is rusty but complete, and still has the engine and (automatic) transmission in it.
Tennessee
The Norris salvage yard has two green 411s among a wide variety of other aircooled VWs.
Texas
Mike Ritterhouse found 3 411 4-door sedans and 2 412s at Volksmith. According to him the cars are complete but have some rust.
Mike Ritterhouse saw a nearly complete yellow 4-door sedan on their lot, which contains quite a few other aircooled VWs. Don’s son Dustin sent me their email address which is the recommended way to contact them. He says there are many Type 4s, engines and parts to choose from.
Vermont
Chris Cassell thinks Mr Rathe has 411s and 412s on the lot, in rough shape but still with engines. They are very close to being crushed, so if you live in that area give him a call!
Washington
Sara Avrams has been to Alseth’s and says they usually have at least one Type 4 on the lot. They are knowledgeable when it comes to interchanging parts between the 411/412 and other aircooled VWs and carry a wide selection of sensors and relays.
